STONEWORK IN TRAIL CONSTRUCTION

Frederica (Fred) Lashley and Marc Archambault of The Unturned Stone, Inc. in Asheville, North Carolina will give a presentation on using stone in back country trail construction. This will explore the most common uses for stone in trails as well as special design considerations for trail structures. The greatest challenge of back country construction is finding and moving materials safely and efficiently with minimal impact on the natural environment. Fred and Marc will discuss how the Unturned Stone crew uses winches, skylines and other systems to move stone great distances.

Fred spent six years from 1988 to 1993 working and leading trail crews on the Appalachian Trail, during which time she had the unique opportunity to build many structures from stone including rebuilding crib walls originally constructed by the CCC. In 1995 she started The Unturned Stone which specializes in both trail construction and general stone masonry in Asheville NC.
Marc Archambault is a stone mason and co-owner of the Unturned Stone. He is the creative force behind Unturned Stone's popular website and project blog, www.unturned.net. Marc is also a photographer, writer, husband and father.

The Unturned Stone is a member of The Professional Trailbuilders Association and the Stone Foundation.
