The workshop project will be a long dry stone retaining wall or walls. These will be built in a public park on a hill overlooking the town of Ventura, the coast and offshore islands. We will be working with the same type of stone that was used in building the Japanese castle ramparts (but in sizes that can be placed in the wall(s) without machinery). To see a report on, and photos of the Japanese Ramparts project, click here. The instructors will be accomplished wallers representing several countries: Canada, England, Ireland, Spain and the USA (and, if there are enough registrants, from Scotland and France). Canada: John Shaw-Rimmington Each instructor will take charge of a certain section of wall and the students will move in groups along the wall working in turn with the instructors, in the process of learning several styles of dry stone walling. The wall that results will display an interesting contrast of techniques. This is not a workshop for complete beginners, some experience required. There will be free camping near the work-site in Grant Park on a hill overlooking the Town of Ventura, the coast and off-shore islands. Lunch will be provided and there will be free beer after work. Hopefully there may be complimentary evening meals in local restaurants as well, but that is not certain at this point. Cost: $500 ($400 to those who also attend the Symposium).
