mallorcan dry stone walling workshop

THIS WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CANCELLED.
IT WILL BE OFFERED AGAIN IN THE SPRING OF 2010

email tomas@stonefoundation.org if you wish to notified
of details about that.

July 27-31, Kykotsmovi, Hopi Reservation, Northern Arizona
Stone Foundation mason/instructors will travel to this village between the Second and Third Mesas of the Hopi reservation in Northern Arizona to collaborate with traditional Hopi builders in leading a workshop in building the old way, structural stonemasonry using native sandstone and limestone with lime mortar—a melding of European and Amerindian traditions. The workshop project will be the construction of stem walls for the residence of a village elder. There will be a maximum number of 30 trainees, half from the Hopi community, half from 'outside'. Cost: $400

TO POTENTIAL REGISTRANTS:

There are still openings. If you are interested plan to arrive on Sunday, July 26.

The closest airport is in Flagstaff. If you are flying in and do not plan to rent a car, plan to arrive in the afternoon (or wait until the afternoon) when a van will be arranged to pick up workshop attendees and transport them to Hopi. Accommodations are available at the Hopi Cultural Center which has a motel and a (free) campground. The Motel is rather expensive for what it is and we are trying to arrange cheaper accommodations. Information about that will be posted here and/or sent to registrants via email. If you are driving in, go to Kykotsmovi village before or after you have made arrangements for your accommodations. Signs will indicate the way to the meeting point.

Payment should be made by check (we are unable to process credit cards at this time) unless there is no longer enough time for it to arrive by mail before Friday, July 24, in which case it can be made when registering on the 26th.

Bring hand tools (hammers, chisels, trowels) if you have them, as well as safety glasses, a hat and work clothes (a hat, long pants and a long sleeved shirt, we will be working with hot lime mortar.)

Email tomas@stonefoundation.org for latest info or phone 505-989-4644.
