This took place in the Stone Art School section of the Granite Museum. It was taught by Homer Peake, a skilled “old school” Barre stone carver familiar with contemporary techniques. The workshop was designed to provide a grounding in the basics of letter carving to stonemasons who might wish to expand their repertory of skills and be able to carve monuments, gravestones and signage. Students learned the fundamentals and some fine points: letter styles, how to lay out inscriptions, preparations for carving, and the carving itself, using pneumatic carving tools. Each student inscribed at least one granite plaque which they were able to take home.
